about

Kindergarten records returns, this time pitting residents Sha Ru head to head with Despina for Polychronia. The title refers to the sociological phenomenon of people’s simultaneous perception of multiple phenomena, which is a reference in particular to Despina’s method of mashing together rhythms and obscuring the logic of time. Real name Mica Matchen, they are a New Jersey raised, New York based producer, composer and DJ who’s textural experimentation makes them the perfect partner in Kindergarten’s growing library of cosmic club workouts.

Despina helms the EP’s first side, with Futurecrimes pitting frenetic, nearly-recognizable sampled percussion against a deep, bubbling bassline and walls of psychedelic soundscapes. A stark juxtaposition between sparseness and sublimity, this track is a space-age banger for only the freakiest of clubs. Crash Blossoms lays out beds of abstract sound punctured by punchy 2-step beats.

The tracks by Sha Ru are the truest representation of the band’s ambitions to date, and a seismic leap in ambition that sees them incorporate vocals for the first time. Jerboa is the banger: weighty kicks and subby lurches of bass dancing around each other for a viscous, 140bpm tearout. Face is more introspective, Masha’s alluring vocals a siren’s call to the bubbling, muddy depths within.
